Maximizing Bonus Value

One day, while playing online poker, I found a casino deposit bonus offer. I asked myself a simple question – what is the real value of this bonus? Does it have a positive expected value — and if so, how large?

In poker, every decision has an EV — either positive or negative. The formula for success is actually simple. You need to make more +EV decisions and avoid -EV decisions. This works in real life, too. Going for a run? +EV. Eating fast food? -EV.

Calculating EV

Let's calculate the EV of a deposit bonus using one of my favorite slots — The Dog House by Pragmatic Play.

For this, we'll collect several million spins from the demo version of the game and verify that the demo is identical to the regular game. Instead of calculating the theoretical probability of winning, we'll simulate each spin by randomly selecting results. We'll model playing through the bonus a million times and calculate three key metrics:

  • EV, which is the expected profit;

  • Clear Rate, which shows how often the bonus is successfully played through;

  • Average win, which is the average amount won among bonuses that were successfully played through.

Let's test a popular bonus offer as an example. It will be 100% up to $100. Wagering requirement for such an offer is usually 40x bonus. Bet size will be $5 in the Dog House slot.

Results

After I processed the simulation, here are the final results:

Winnings Distribution by Prize Range

You can verify the calculations using the bonus value score. In conclusion, you can see that we'll successfully complete the bonus in 8% of cases, with an average win of $2,244. The expected value (EV) of one bonus is +$70.

Now that we've verified the bonus is +EV, let's examine how wagering, slot variance, maximum bet, and maximum win limits affect it.

Impact of Bet Size on EV

Many casinos set a maximum bet size during bonus wagering, almost always about $5. Analysis shows this restriction reduces EV, but not significantly.

Net Profit vs Expected Value

Here's the graph:

Key findings:

  • Reducing the maximum bet size from $75 to $5 (by 15 times) reduces EV by only 24%;

  • Even with maximum bets of $0.4, the bonus maintains a positive EV;

  • For players, the practical difference is minimal.

That is why you should not worry too much about bet size restrictions if you can bet at least $0.4.

Impact of Wagering Requirements on EV

There's a popular opinion among players that high wagering requirements are terrible for your bonus. Let's examine if this is really true.

Impact of Bet Size on EV

Impact of Wagering Requirements on EV

Indeed, as wagering requirements increase, EV gradually decreases, but only becomes zero after a 500x wager on the bonus + deposit amount. Now let's look at how wagering affects both average win size and clear rate.

As you can see, when the wagering requirements increase, your chance of completing the bonus decreases. At the same time, the average win amount in case of success significantly grows. That is why wins become rarer but much larger.

Impact of Maximum Win Limits on EV

Maximum win restrictions from a bonus significantly reduce EV. As an example, let’s take the same bonus in The Dog House.

Impact of Wagering on Average Win and Clear Rate

Here are the key findings:

  • Without a win limit, EV is about $70;

  • With a $10,000 limit, which is 100x the bonus, EV is $69. You can see that virtually there is no difference, only 1.4%;

  • A $3,000 limit, which is 30x the bonus, cuts EV in half;

  • Any limit below $2,000 makes the bonus negative EV.

That is why you should better avoid bonuses with low maximum win limits. This is the most destructive restriction casinos may impose.

Impact of Volatility on EV

Let's examine how slot volatility affects EV and Clear Rate. For maximum contrast, we'll play through bonuses with a 30x wagering requirement on the bonus + deposit amount. The stakes will be $1 in slots with different volatility but identical RTP.

Impact of Maximum Win Limits on EV

As the graph shows, slot volatility significantly impacts the Clear Rate. High variance means high EV — but also high risk. Which means that bonuses are completed less frequently.

Key Conclusions

  • Most deposit bonuses do have +EV;

  • Restricting bets to €5 reduces EV only slightly;

  • Wagering requirements reduce EV insignificantly;

  • Maximum win restrictions can seriously impact the EV;

  • Higher variance means higher EV, and higher risk.

Practical Recommendations

Based on our simulations, here's how to maximize bonus value:

  • Choose the highest variance slots available for bonus play;

  • If possible, use the maximum allowable bet size;

  • Prioritize bonuses without maximum win restrictions;

  • Don't despair if wagering requirements are higher 50x;

  • Remember that most of the time you'll lose, but occasionally you can win big.

What's Next?

I accepted that bonus offer, and now you can see what came of it here. Always check the EV of bonuses using the bonus value score to choose the best options for yourself.

Suggested Improvements:

  1. Add Visual Elements - Include the graphs you mention in the text to make the data more accessible.

  2. Include a Real Case Study - Share a specific example of a bonus you played through, with actual results.

  3. Add a Calculator Tool - Create an interactive calculator for readers to input their bonus terms and see the estimated EV.

  4. Expand the Slot Comparison - Compare more slots with different volatility levels and RTPs to give readers more options.

  5. Include Casino-Specific Analysis - Add sections analyzing the typical bonus structures of major online casinos.

  6. Add Risk Management Section - Discuss bankroll management strategies when hunting bonuses.

  7. References Section - Add citations to mathematical concepts and research to strengthen credibility.

  8. FAQ Section - Add common questions about bonus hunting and their answers.

  9. Glossary - Include definitions of technical terms for beginners.

  10. Summary Table - Create a quick-reference table of different bonus structures and their approximate EV.
